This Glossary does not attempt to give precise definitions, just a basic understanding of common terms you may come across when reading about website optimisation & promotion services.
Search key word
Words, included in the copy (text) of the webpage or/and in the designated sections of the source code to indicate the main topic of the page. If represented in all the relevant areas of the page, keywords make it possible to find this page in the search engines and influence the ranking of the page in the search results.
Link (hyperlink)
A piece of code that connects one webpage to another (and loads this connected page) when user clicks on the text or image representing the link. Surfing the web (moving from one page to the other) is possible thanks to the hyperlinks.

Link exchange
Popular method of increasing a website's ranking when owner of a website creates links to the other website in exchange to the link from this site pointing back to him.
Link popularity
Number of links pointing to your website. Together with the quality (=popularity) of the sites these links are going out of the number of such links is one of the main factors of your site ranking.

(website) Optimisation
Tuning up website's source code in order to achieve better ranking in the search engines. Optimisation involves areas such as keywords selection and placement, content of the pages, source code of the pages.
(website) Ranking
Position of a website in the search engine results list when a search is conducted for the keywords of this site. Higher website ranking means position of this site closer to the top of the search results list.
